Master one of the world's most popular games with the help of a mechanical engineering professor who has a passion for pool. More than 80 principles of the game, presented with more than 250 precisely scaled illustrations and photographs, offer players of all levels a thorough overview of the fundamentals of 8-ball and 9-ball, including grip and stance, basic shots, position play and strategy, bank and kick shots, and advanced techniques such as carom and jump shots.
This book develops understanding of basic principles. Many pool and billiards books are "cookbook" style telling you what to do but not always why or how it works. Some also contain countless examples of different kinds of shots. These examples are useful, but often do not produce a level of understanding that can truly make someone a better pool player. This book contains examples and many illustrations, but the main goal is to present the fundamental principles of the game. By developing an understanding of these principles, you can anticipate and predict all types of shots that you might face, not just limited examples that might be presented. If you understand a few basic principles, you can figure out shots on your own without being shown examples of every possible shot.

This bopok, with the atendant on-line resources, is in every respect outstanding. It progresses logically in the manner of programmed instruction. The explanations are very understandable and the on-line references are easily available. A great instructional aid when used "As Directed"..

The Illustrated Principles of Pool and Billiards - Book
By Mark from Atlanta GA on June 7, 2010

Good information, However...
1. Wording / phrasing is very repetitive. Each lesson point discussed is written at least three times, so though you are paying for an inch-thick book you are receiving 1/3 inch of information.
2. Worst of all is that in every case the publisher has managed to place each of the illustrated diagrams two pages past the paragraphs discussing that lesson. In other words, as you read about one lesson on the left page open to you, on the right page open to you is a diagram of the previous lesson. To see the diagram of the lesson you currently are reading you must turn over to a following page. This is exceptionally confusing and also frustrating once the reader realizes that simply by including or eliminating a single page (even a blank one) near the begining the entire book could have been formatted "properly" so that corresponding illustrations and text lessons on on adjoining open pages. Hard to accept advice concerning strict adhereance to detail when such a glaring error dominates this entire book.

NoneGreat book for beginners
By Dan Werner on October 1, 2008

This book covers everything you need to know as a beginner and a C-Player.
The reading is very easy, great examples and pictures, and it does provide you a bit of information on strategy.
If you are a good player, you will probably still come away with a few learnings from this book, so definitely worth it to pick it up (price isn\'t bad either!).
