Tip
This is the part of the cue that actually touches the cue ball so it's obviously very important. The right tip will give you more control and a better feel for the ball.
What is the right tip?
Soft layered-leather tips (like pigskin) grip the cue ball longer to generate maximum spin and finesse. Harder phenolic or synthetic tips don't compress at all, transferring raw energy instantly making them the industry standard for powerful break and jump shots.
For the best control, you want a cue that fits your hands. If its too think, the shaft can be hard to align in your hand but if it's too thin, it can move around causing inconsistent shots.
How do I know what's for me?
Narrower shafts (11.75mm to 12.25mm) reduce cue ball deflection and make it easier to apply extreme spin. Wider shafts (13mm or greater) provide a sturdier, more forgiving bridge and a consistent hit, making them the preferred choice for traditional players prioritizing accurate center-ball striking and newer players.

Different shafts can be designed for different uses. So it's important to know what to look for
Why choose one over another?
Use: Breaking or jumping requires a lot more force & control than other shots so, get a shaft designed to do it Material: Carbon Fibre shafts are light and very strong. Wooden ones have a nicer feel. Length: Some shafts come in various lengths for those short or tall players.
Most high quality pool cues break down into two parts for easy storage and carrying. The Joint on the shaft is designed to lock into the Pin on the butt, creating a single cue.
Why is this important?
If you already have a cue/shaft or plan on having multiple (like one for general play and another for breaking), getting ones with the same joint/pin allow you to use them interchangeably.
Cue / Butt
The butt is heart of every cue and the part you grip when shooting. It makes up the bulk of the weight of a cue and can impact how you hit the ball and how the cue feels overall.

Butts come in thousands of different styles and finishes. On top of that, you can often customize them, adjusting the weight, adding engraving, and adding custom wraps/grips.
The Wrap or Grip can be added to many cues, adding personal style while also customizing how the cue feels and plays in your hand.
Some popular wrap types
Linen: Thin thread giving a soft touch and a light grip Leather: Premium look with a durable, smooth grip. Sport Grip: Soft rubber provides the best grip and absorbs shock.
A Break Cue is designed with a very hard tip and ferrule to handle the high impact of the opening shot. A Jump Cue is shorter and lighter, designed to help you bounce the cue ball over an obstructing ball. A Jump/Break or Hybrid combo cue features a quick-release joint that lets you switch between the two functions. How do I properly clean and maintain a wooden shaft?
Avoid using water or wet cloths, which can swell the wood grain. Instead, use a specialized shaft cleaner or a fast-drying shaft conditioner. This keeps the surface "slick" without damaging the wood. Check out our line of shaft care products.
What is the difference between a wrap and a wrapless cue handle?
Wraps (usually Irish Linen or Leather) are designed to absorb moisture from your hands and provide a consistent grip. A wrapped cue also gives you more customization options as you pick different types of material and color to match your tastes. Wrapless cues (finished wood) are preferred by players who like to feel the natural texture of the wood and want a smoother transition during their stroke.
What tip hardness (soft, medium, hard) is best for my playing style?
Soft tips provide more "grip" on the cue ball, making it easier to apply extreme spin (English), but they require more frequent shaping. Hard tips last longer and provide more consistency on power shots, but they are more prone to miscuing if not properly chalked. Medium tips are the most popular choice for all-around play.
What is the benefit of a carbon fiber shaft over wood?
Carbon fiber shafts are virtually warp-proof and highly resistant to dings, temperature changes, and humidity. They provide a very consistent hit, stay smoother for longer, and generally require less maintenance than traditional maple shafts.
