Most high quality pool cues break down into two parts for easy storage and carrying. The Joint on the shaft is designed to lock into the Pin on the butt, creating a single cue.

Why is this important?

If you already have a cue/shaft or plan on having multiple (like one for general play and another for breaking), getting ones with the same joint/pin allow you to use them interchangeably.

What is a "Jump/Break" cue, and do I need one?

A Break Cue is designed with a very hard tip and ferrule to handle the high impact of the opening shot. A Jump Cue is shorter and lighter, designed to help you bounce the cue ball over an obstructing ball. Wraps (usually Irish Linen or Leather) are designed to absorb moisture from your hands and provide a consistent grip. A wrapped cue also gives you more customization options as you pick different types of material and color to match your tastes. Wrapless cues (finished wood) are preferred by players who like to feel the natural texture of the wood and want a smoother transition during their stroke.

What tip hardness (soft, medium, hard) is best for my playing style?

Soft tips provide more "grip" on the cue ball, making it easier to apply extreme spin (English), but they require more frequent shaping. Hard tips last longer and provide more consistency on power shots, but they are more prone to miscuing if not properly chalked. Medium tips are the most popular choice for all-around play.
